Within the perfume industry, packaging has become almost as big a product as the perfumes themselves. Packaging offers great value for money and gives you the wonderful endorphin rush that can only be attained when you get something for nothing.

And guys, when you upset your better half, nothing says 'I'm really sorry for being a big jerk' than a perfume package. A universal principle in any woman's life is that forgiveness can be bought for around $100. Spend $200 and you've invested in insurance for the next time you decide to come home at 3am.

However, there are pitfalls. The caveats we put on packages are:

  • don't be tempted by bells and whistles. It might seem like the world's greatest t-shirt but if the perfume is sub-standard, you won't be happy in the long term. Remember that it is the perfume you are buying, not the peripherals;
  • don't be afraid to buy from somewhere other than large department stores (although these are a great choice if you want variety). Online stores can offer huge savings if you know what you like and want. Smaller boutiques too can offer you not only savings but additional samples and miniature bottles if you ask nicely; and
  • do the maths. Some tricky manufacturers will make you think you're getting a great deal when you're not. Weigh up the costs carefully.
